Pollution Prevention Champion:
Luper Brothers Automotive, Lewiston, Idaho

 Environmental Commitment
Luper Brothers Automotive's goal is to make a positive impact to the environment and community in which we live and work, and to promote a balance between business and pollution prevention.

 Pollution Prevention Successes

 Public Education

When calling for an appointment, customers on hold hear about the services Luper Brothers provides along with the company's commitment to the environment, tips on energy conservation and other current environmental issues.

 Water Conservation

The shop conserves water and protects water quality in several ways. All floor drains in the cleaning room have been covered to prevent chemicals from entering the wastewater system. Floors are cleaned with an aqueous wash unit that captures and recycles wash water. The facility has installed a sump system to capture wastewater and remove contaminants before water is sent to the city treatment plant. A capture basin in the parking lot minimizes contaminants from parking lot runoff before entering the city's storm water system. The facility also has set conservation goals for water use.

 Waste Minimization

Luper Brothers takes steps to minimize and eliminate hazardous waste generation. The shop has substituted less toxic solvents for parts washing and has greatly reduced solvent use by acquiring a hot water spray cabinet parts washer. Used oil is burned in an EPA-certified oil burner for heat in the winter.

 Recycling

In the office, Luper Brothers' employees recycle aluminum, cardboard, plastics, scrap iron, and styrofoam peanuts. An incentive program has been developed by which employees may spend their own time recovering the more valuable metals (copper, aluminum, bearings) from waste components and earn extra income by selling these parts. This encourages recycling and minimizes waste.

 Leadership

Luper Brothers Automotive has received recognition from the Idaho GEMStars program and northern Idaho's GreenStar environmental recognition program. In addition, Luper Brothers' staff serve on various automotive and environmental committees.
