Parks Royal Body Works purchased a solvent recycler and a paint gun washer.  The recycler separates the used solvent from the paint solids, allowing the solvent to be used again.  The paint gets collected and baked into small cakes.  Prior to using the solvent recycler, the shop would generate approximately one barrel of solvent waste each month.  Now it takes two years to fill the same barrel.  The paint gun washer cleans paint guns much more efficiently than hand cleaning, thereby, reducing the use of solvents.  Both changes equal a reduction in hazardous waste of approximately 550 gallons a year and a savings of $2,980 per year.  

Parks Royal Body Works also switched to a Glasuit 90 line waterborne paint system.  Solvent-based automotive paints contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants that contribute to air pollution and cause numerous adverse health effects.  Alternatively, waterborne paints are less toxic, have low VOC levels, and are less flammable.  Their use reduces air emissions, improves worker health and safety, and can decrease insurance costs.  Compared to solvent-borne products, less product may be needed to cover the same surface area when using waterborne paints, and paint guns can be cleaned with water or water-based solutions rather than paint thinner, acetone, or methyl acetate.  With the waterborne paint system and paint gun washer, Parks Royal Body Works has reduced hazardous waste generation by 1,265 gallons per year and saved approximately $35,000 a year, which accounts for enhanced painter efficiency.
