Pollution Prevention Champion:
Parks Royal Body Works, Inc., Boise, Idaho

 Environmental Commitment

In a tradition started in 1947 by Paul Parks and carried on by the Thornton family, Parks Royal Body Works makes it their ultimate goal to provide superior service and quality auto repairs at a reasonable cost.  This superior service also includes a commitment to reducing their impact on the environment through using the most current technology and best management practices.

 Pollution Prevention Success

 Energy Efficiency

In many businesses, lighting is responsible for up to 30 percent of the electric bill.  Parks Royal Body Works replaced over 60 T12 light fixtures with T8 fixtures.  Converting from T12 to T8 light fixtures uses on average 20 percent less energy to produce the same light output.

Parks Royal Body Works also replaced six original garage doors dating back to the 1950s with new insulated tight-seal doors.  They also replaced the old tar roof with a single, membrane reflective white roofing material.

The shop also installed a new Global Ultra + 1 downdraft paint booth that has many energy-saving features.  It recycles 90 percent of its heated air while running and has computerized intake and exhaust fans that run only at the level needed per paint job, resulting in a shorter baking cycle time.  It also has a direct fire burner, which uses less natural gas than an old heat exchange burner.  The paint booth has reduced natural gas use by 30 percent and electricity by 15percent.  Parks Royal Body Works also saw a 10% increase in painter efficiency because of the paint booth.

 Waste Reduction

Parks Royal Body Works purchased a solvent recycler and a paint gun washer.  The recycler separates the used solvent from the paint solids, allowing the solvent to be used again.  The paint gets collected and baked into small cakes.  Prior to using the solvent recycler, the shop would generate approximately one barrel of solvent waste each month.  Now it takes two years to fill the same barrel.  The paint gun washer cleans paint guns much more efficiently than hand cleaning, thereby, reducing the use of solvents.  Both changes equal a reduction in hazardous waste of approximately 550 gallons a year and a savings of $2,980 per year.

Parks Royal Body Works also switched to a Glasuit 90 line waterborne paint system.  Solvent-based automotive paints contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants that contribute to air pollution and cause numerous adverse health effects.  Alternatively, waterborne paints are less toxic, have low VOC levels, and are less flammable.  Their use reduces air emissions, improves worker health and safety, and can decrease insurance costs.  Compared to solvent-borne products, less product may be needed to cover the same surface area when using waterborne paints, and paint guns can be cleaned with water or water-based solutions rather than paint thinner, acetone, or methyl acetate.  With the waterborne paint system and paint gun washer, Parks Royal Body Works has reduced hazardous waste generation by 1,265 gallons per year and saved approximately $35,000 a year, which accounts for enhanced painter efficiency.
