Pollution Prevention Champion:
Teton Valley Community Recycling, Idaho

 Environmental Commitment
The citizens of Teton County are committed to their community and the environment. Since 1997, a volunteer recycling program has diverted 175 tons of material from local landfills.

 Pollution Prevention Successes

 Commitment

Teton Valley Community Recycling is a volunteer recycling program serving Teton County residents. Volunteers collect materials each Saturday at a local grocery store, Broulim's, then truck the recyclable items at least 45 miles to a recycling processor in Idaho Falls or Jackson, Wyoming. Program costs are raised through the sale of materials and fundraisers such as an annual Trash Bash, where local artists auction art made from trash. Proceeds help fund collection containers, mileage reimbursement for volunteers taking the recyclable materials to the processor, and education and outreach.

 Community

Many in the community provide support. The local grocery store, Broulim's, provides space for collection and allows use of its cardboard baler. Volunteers donate time. Local businesses provide support through donations or by trading services. Companies can trade free transport of materials to the process in exchange for free advertising space on the side of the recycling containers.

 Recycling

Teton Valley Community Recycling collects one to two tons of aluminum and steel cans, newspaper, and magazines each month, along with 500 pounds of cardboard. Since 1997, the program has diverted 175 tons of material from local landfills.

 Long-Term Vision

Teton Valley Community Recycling hopes someday, recycling will be a county-run operation. Until then, they are focusing on the existing program, educating their community and creating partnerships around the region to facilitate development of a county-run program.
