Proposed Water Quality Improvement Plan for Hatwai Creek Subbasin

Accepting Comments from May 13, 2019 to June 12, 2019

DEQ is seeking public comment on proposed plans to address elevated temperatures in Hatwai Creek within the Hatwai Creek subbasin. The subbasin is a 32-square mile watershed located in Nez Perce County.

Temperature is a key factor in the health of fish and other coldwater organisms. Recent analyses of water quality data demonstrated that temperatures are above recommended levels in Hatwai Creek due to a lack of shade.

The Hatwai Creek Subbasin Assessment and Total Maximum Daily Loads: 2018 Temperature TMDL proposes to update total maximum daily loads designed to lower temperatures in Hatwai Creek.

The recommended actions seek to bring Hatwai Creek into compliance with state water quality standards and restore them to conditions supporting their beneficial uses, which include cold water aquatic life, salmonid spawning, and secondary contact recreation.
